Şavşat A Dreamlice Place

Turgut Keskin

Şavşat is an attractive alpine town surrounded by spruce forest, meadows of wild flowers, rushing streams and finely decorated wooden houses.

The town itself is not all that impressive. It is basically a market town for the outlying villages in the area and minibuses arrive daily carrying in these friendly people to buy supplies

Typical of this region, wide forests cover the area, and this landscape of mountains, lakes, plateaus and rivers, together with the traditional settings of pretty wooden houses, offers a pleasant atmosphere to visitors.

The villages have the same attractive appearance as all those in the region. Verdant slopes spotted with typical wooden houses created with expertise and care. Most of these finely decorated traditional houses were built long ago, but even the recent additions participate whole heartedly in the tradition. These delightful wooden houses have open bays or "eyvan"s where the families spend their daily life in warm weather.

These houses, also, are built higher and stronger to protect them from snow which can accumulate to several meters in the winter months.

In this town of diverse nature, there also exist numerous ancient sites for sightseers to visit..

Wonderfull scenic roads lead to ruined churches, citadels, bridges and natural treasures..

During the middle age, this area came under georgian sovereignty. Şavşat is the best place for touring

remains of the georgian past. Seven kilometers to the north of the town, Cevizli (Tibet) Church stands as the legacy of this period. Constructed of finely hewn stone on a cruciform plan, the interior is decorated with frescos. Unfortunately, like so many of the historic buildings in this region, it is in a poor state of repair.

The church remained intact and abandoned until the early 50s. In spite of gold hunters's destruction, the ruins are still impressive.

Kirazlı Odaları, one of the most striking historic structure, indicates that Şavşat was an important christian centre in the mediaeval age. It is probably the monastery referred to in mediaeval documents as being situated at a great height and concealed from sight.

Sahara Yaylası National Park is 17 km from Şavşat on way to Ardahan. Climbing the road which links eastern anatolia to the black sea coast, the views of the mountains, forests and several villages are very impressive. The plateau is covered with mineral and fresh springs. At the top of the pass is Kocabey Kışlası where you can see mountain chalets used by local people during the summer. This Yayla is summer grazing area for the animals of Kocabey Village. The yayla is fairly close to the road so you can talk to the friendly residents and eat local foods. You can get a good idea of what the yayla economy is like in here.

Because of high alpine heat even in mid summer you may need warm clothing up here..

Karagöl National Park where there is one of the most beautiful alpine lake, is 45 km northeast of Şavşat via Veliköy Village. The area around the lake is covered with a variety of pine trees and also has picnic and lodge accommodation facilities.

Along the roads lead to these historical and beautiful places, wildlife, including bears, is plentiful and you can see a lot of trout farm where you can get extremely fresh trout fried up
